La Linea, or the Gateway to Gibraltar, is a small port town at the far easternmost point of Cadiz Province. Ideally located to explore the Costa del Sol, La Linea forms the boundary between Spain and the British territory of Gibraltar. If you’re flying into Gibraltar Airport (GBR), then you have the option of hiring a car from AurigaCrown at La Linea – just a short walk over the border into Spain.
While most people pass through La Linea on their way to the Costas, La Linea does have a few attractions that are worth investigating further. The old part of town, La Atunara, is home to the original harbour and church, a nearby open air market and lots of bars and restaurants, while the nearby Playa de Levante beach is always popular. There’s also a popular Bullring with an attached small museum which attracts many experts and fans of the events. While it’s a contentious issue in Spain, the Bull fighting museum is well worth a visit to learn about this traditional activity.
Aside from the road to the Costas, the main reason people visit La Linea is to head into Gibraltar. The quickest route to and from ‘The Rock’ is to walk over the border as the queues for car crossings can get very long. You will still need your passport to enter the British territory, and you have to walk across the runway of Gibraltar Airport. An interesting stroll to say the least!
If you’re heading away from Gibraltar, then hiring a car with AurigaCrown at La Linea and walking over reduces your queuing time at the border, and gets you on the road much quicker!
