Madrid is Spain’s capital city, and as you would expect, it’s also the largest, busiest and most visited destination in Spain. It’s a vast, rather modern city, with a much more recent history compared to Granada and Sevilla, thought that’s not to say the city doesn’t have a lot to offer the millions of visitors who arrive every year. A city of culture and learning, Madrid is a favourite destination for art lovers from across the world, and is also renowned for its fabulous nightlife.
The road network surrounding Madrid is very efficient, so when hiring a car from Madrid airport, you should find entering the city fairly easy. In the centre, on-street parking is hard to come by, so check with your accommodation if they have any dedicated parking spaces, or find your nearest secure underground parking facility.
Once in the city proper, you’ll find that while there are plenty of museums, monuments and architectural highlights Madrid is more of a cultural centre for art and literature. Some of the most popular attractions include the Prado, one of the oldest and largest art collections in the world, along with the Reina Sofía centre of modern art and the Thyssen-Bornemisza gallery.
It’s been suggested that Madrid has the highest number of bars per person than any other city in Europe, and the city certainly has a reputation as the nightlife capital of Spain. The vast and diverse selection of bars, cafes, restaurants and clubs are certainly a draw for many visitors, though be prepared for some long nights – many of the most popular venues don’t even open until 1am. Also, it’s quite common to find yourself in a very noisy traffic jam at 3am as the crowds move from one hot spot to another!
