This ancient city of was originally fortified, and while there isn’t too much left to see in the way of walls and ruins, the Torres de Serranos, is one of the original 12 gates of the city, and offers spectacular views from the top.
Around the harbour area you’ll find a range of bars and restaurants with beautiful views out to sea, however the Barrio Del Carmen area is the place to head for nightlife, with a much larger selection of places to eat, drink and dance.
For lovers of architecture, there are a number of buildings in the city that you won’t want to miss. The Gothic styles of the Valencia Cathedral and the La Lonja de la Seda de Valencia (the old silk exchange building which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) draw large crowds. The area opposite this is the bustling Mercado central, still a thriving marketplace despite being one of the oldest in Europe. Also in the Gothic style, the Palacio Del Marques De Dos Aguas is a former palace with Baroque additions, including a beautifully detailed entrance.
There are also a wide range of museums in the city that cater for all tastes. The Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts) is a spectacular Baroque building housing art dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. In contrast, Spain's first centre for modern art, the Institut ValenciĆ d'Art Modern is home to a diverse mixture of installations and pieces from more contemporary times.
