Like the other Canary Islands, Gran Canaria offers year round sunshine and a myriad of beach-based activities for holidaymakers. Whether you prefer it in the cooler north, or at one of the beach resorts to the south, Gran Canaria is an island of contrasting landscapes, and hiring a car is the best way to appreciate it. From rolling sand-dunes, to sub-tropical forests and snow-capped mountains, Gran Canaria offers some fantastic scenery to enjoy.

The airport is just south of the capital Las Palmas, which is well worth a visit. This important historical city includes the old town of Vegueta, with quant cobbled streets, museums and Cathedral and the Triana shopping district where you can indulge in a little retail therapy.

The south of the island is where you’ll find most of the busy beaches and therefore, holidaymakers. Puerto de Morgan (known as little Venice), the stylish town of Maspalomas, San Augustin, Puerto Rico and Meloneras are busy, though not as much as the popular Playa del Ingles, with its bustling beachfront clubs and bars.

There are a number of theme parks catering for children or simply the young at heart, and hiring a car from Lanzarote airport is the best way to travel between them during the course of your visit. There are 3 waterparks, a number of animal sanctuaries and zoos (including Crocodile park and Reptilandia park), along with Sioux City – a wild-west theme park complete with re-enacted bank robberies and saloon shows.

Overall, Gran Canaria does have a more exclusive feel to it than some of the other Canary Island resorts, though the island still manages to retain a sense of fun, and the locals are known to be very friendly and attentive to holidaymakers from all walks of life.
