Seville

The capital of the Spanish region of Andalucia, the ancient city of Sevilla, is famed for its spectacular architecture and vibrant cultural history, including flamenco dancing, bull fighting and is reputedly the home of Tapas. Previously home to the Romans, Moors and Castilians, Sevillians are known for their wit and outlook on life, while the city itself is famous for its vitality and flamboyance.

Renting a car at Sevilla San Pablo Airport (SVQ) gives visitors the opportunity to explore this fabulous city in all its glory, where Fiestas are a way of life. Easter is an extra special time of year in Sevilla, with Holy Week, Semana Santa, a religious festival with long processions followed by huge floats and cheering crowds. Following this, the Fería de Abril festival takes place; a whole week of parades, dancing, drinking, eating and partying day and night in specially erected tents. This is an opportunity to see Sevilla at its most colourful, with everyone wearing elaborate traditional dress.

Two of the city’s most popular attractions are the Alcazar, and Sevilla Cathedral both in the old part of the city. The Cathedral is the world’s largest gothic cathedral, built using elements of the original Mosque that stood on the site. La Giralda bell tower was originally a minaret, and climbing the steps of the tower offers brave climbers spectacular views across the city, and is the burial place of Christopher Columbus. The Alcazar, a royal Mudejar palace with beautiful gardens, is Europe’s oldest royal palace still in use today, and is one of Spain’s many UNESCO world heritage sites.

Arguably the best way to experience the tradition of tapas is to tour the streets of Sevilla, where it’s reputed that there are over 4000 tapas bars dedicated to the traditional cuisine, making it a must-visit destination for anyone touring Andalucia.
